Is This Flying Car Company For Real?

terrafugia_tf-x_rendering_41

We’ve been promised a flying car for as long as I can remember. From The Jetsons to Back To The Future, we’ve been sold this dream for years and years. Owning something that starts out on the ground and ends up flying through the air is something I want to experience before I kick the bucket.

The TF-X promises to:
– be a plug-in hybrid on the ground
– drive like a normal car
– have a range of over 500 miles
– fit inside a single-car garage
It’s expected to hit the market in 2021.
Still, I’m sold. But is this company for real? Who are they? Well Terrafugia was founded in 2006 and won an MIT $100K Business Plan Competition, then started raising seed funding. To date, the company has raised $5.8 million.
Its first project, the Transition, went from prototyping to flying in about two years. It’s a street legal “car” that transforms into a plane and back.
Terrafugia was also tapped as a subcontractor on a project funded by DARPA calledTransformer in 2010. In essence, the $65 million project aimed to build a “flying Humvee.”

Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus First Impressions

Lenovo on Tuesday launched the Vibe K5 Plus smartphone in India. The company has stressed that India is its first launch market for this phone, which was announced last month at the MWC 2016 trade show along with the Lenovo Vibe K5.
At the launch event, we got some time to play with the new Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus and here are our first impressions.
To start off, the Vibe K5 Plus is not strictly a successor to the Lenovo Vibe K4 Note (Review) which only launched in January. Instead, it is an upgrade to the popular Lenovo A6000 and Lenovo A6000 Plussmartphones. Lenovo has stated that the new Vibe K5 Plus will strengthen its smartphone portfolio in the sub-Rs. 10,000 category.
When quizzed about the naming of the Vibe K5 Plus, Sudhin Mathur, Director – Smartphones, Lenovo India, explained that the “Vibe” name has been used because of the company’s new branding strategy following its acquisition of Motorola. In January, Lenovo revealed that higher-end smartphones launching in 2016 will carry the Moto name, while the budget handsets will have Vibe branding. Further, Mathur added that the company plans to manufacture half of the smartphones it sells in India this year locally. He however declined to confirm whether or not the first batch of Vibe K5 Plus smartphones going on sale in India has been manufactured locally.
The first thing we noticed when we held the new Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus was its plastic body, which has a finish that feels metallic. Mathur told us that the company has worked on various minor details such as the colour-matched accents on the front and rear of the handset, such as the ring around the camera lens. While these little touches don’t make the handset stand out, they do make it feel polished. The Vibe K5 Plus will be available in Champagne Gold, Platinum Silver and Graphite Grey. The unit we used was a Platinum Silver model.
With a 5-inch screen, the Vibe K5 Plus fit perfectly in our palm and was comfortable for single-handed operations. In front, you’ll see a camera, earpiece, and sensors above the display. Right below it sit three capacitive buttons for Recents, Home, and Back. The rear panel has a large Lenovo logo in the middle, while the camera sits in the top right corner, accompanied by an LED flash. There are stereo speakers on the rear, with Dolby Atmos enhancement, which is now seen on almost all Lenovo phones. Mathur revealed that the Vibe K5 Plus uses a PM8916 Audio codec for sound clarity. We couldn’t test the speakers at launch due to the noisy environment.
The Vibe K5 Plus’s physical power and volume buttons are on the right, while the charging port and headphones socket are on top. The bottom and left panels do not have any ports or keys.
The back is removable, which is not surprising considering that the Vibe K5 Plus features a removable 2750mAh battery. This phone also features two standard Micro-SIM slots and a separate microSD card slot for expandable storage, as against the current trend of hybrid slots which force you to choose between a second SIM and additional storage.
Under the hood, the smartphone packs a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor (four 1.2GHz cores and four 1.5GHz cores) with an integrated Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM. The smartphone packs 16GB of storage and supports microSD cards of up to 128GB. During our limited time with the handset, the Vibe K5 Plus seemed to handle multitasking and app switching pretty easily without any lag. We will reserve our verdict on its overall performance till we get the chance to put it through our detailed review process. For connectivity, the Vibe K5 Plus supports 4G on both SIMs. It comes with LTE Cat 4 for download speeds of up to 150Mbps and upload speed of up to 50Mbps. Other connectivity features include Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.1 LE, A-GPS, and Micro-USB.
In the camera department, the smartphone sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with an f2.2 aperture and LED flash. There is a 5-megapixel front camera, which has an f2.8 aperture. Lenovo detailed that the rear camera uses an OmniVision (OV13850) camera sensor on the back, while the front features auto beautification through software. In our brief camera tests, we found images taken with the Vibe K5 Plus in normal indoor lighting to be crisp with decent colour reproduction on the phone’s screen. The front camera was able to take good selfies. Even so, do stay tuned for our detailed Vibe K5 Plus review, when we will really get a chance to test the camera under varied conditions.
The Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop and a light version of the Vibe UI running on top, which looked pretty much identical to that of Lenovo Vibe K4 Note. The smartphone comes preloaded with an app called Theme Centre which offers various options to customise the look and feel of the UI.
Much like the Vibe K4 Note, the Vibe K5 Plus also comes with TheaterMax VR technology which converts standard content into a split-screen format in order to look like VR when using the optional ANT VR headset accessories. Consumers have to buy this headset separately to experience it.
Priced at Rs. 8,499, the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus goes head-on with a number of devices in the sub-Rs. 10,000 category, many of which could give it a hard time. The Coolpad Note 3 (Review) is priced slightly higher at Rs. 8,999, but packs in a fingerprint scanner. The Meizu m2 note, priced at Rs. 9,999, could also pose some competition. The Yu Yureka Plus, priced at Rs. 8,999, might be slightly outdated but still offers a great camera and performance.

Android Instant Apps: Everything You Need to Know

Android Instant Apps: Everything You Need to Know

  • The Instant Apps is compatible with Android Jelly Bean and later.
    • With Instant Apps, only the required app modules are downloaded.
    • Some of Google partners include BuzzFeed, Zumper, and Disney.
Google at I/O 2016 keynote made some major announcements and one of them was about the Android Instant Apps. The feature will allow users to open any app by just tapping on a link even if the app isn’t installed. It’s an expansion of the app streaming feature the company’s been working on.
During the keynote, Google stressed that it wanted to make possible for people to access a wider range of apps, seamlessly. “Today [Wednesday] we’re sharing a preview of a new project that we think will change how people experience Android apps. We call it Android Instant Apps, and it evolves Android apps to be able to run instantly, without requiring installation,” said Suresh Ganapathy, Product Manager.
The new feature basically lets users access apps from search, social media, messaging, and other deep links without the need to stop and first install the app. The company explained that the feature requires partner apps to be built with modules which will mean that user will access only the necessary modules when tapped on an app feature without downloading the entire app.
Google to make sure majority of Android users get access to the Instant Apps feature has made it compatible with Android Jelly Bean OS and later versions. Ganapathy claims this way the Android Instant Apps will reach over a billion users.
In a blog post, Ganapathy explains that developers will not be required to build a new and separate app for Google’s Instant Apps feature. “It’s the same Android APIs, the same project, the same source code. You’ll simply update your existing Android app to take advantage of Instant Apps functionality,” he adds.
The company confirmed that they are working with a small set of developers for the Instant Apps, and they will gradually expand the access soon.
As of now, Google worked with partners developers like BuzzFeed, B&H Photo, Medium, Hotel Tonight, Zumper and Disney. The Android Instant Apps will be available to users later this year.
Google has of course been working on app streaming features for a while now, and in November last year let users stream apps from search results.

    I-Phone 7 Leaked

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • A case maker says the iPhone 7 may house four speaker grilles.
    • The smartphone appears to lack a 3.5mm audio jack.
    • Apple may look to LG to manufacture some dual-cameras.

New images detailing the rear casing of the iPhone 7 have emerged revealing some interesting details. If the pictures are real, the upcoming model may have the best sound performance ever seen on an iPhone.
The iPhone 7 case reveals that there might be four speaker grilles on this year's iPhone, with two at the bottom and two on the top.. This refutes all previous rumours, as some suggest that the iPhone 7 may ditch the 3.5mm audio jack at the back to house two speaker grilles at the bottom, but no leaks so far have shown four speaker grilles. According to the leak (via Nowhereelse), there are two speaker grilles on the bottom, adjacent to the Lightning port, and two housed on top.
We also don't see any sign of the 3.5mm audio jack on the bottom panel. This is in line with previous reports that suggest that the audio will now be connected through the Lightning port or Bluetooth wireless devices. The camera seems to be housed on the top-right of the smartphone; however, the mic and the flash follow at the bottom, and not on the sides. The camera hole also seems to be larger than the one seen on the iPhone 6s, indicating more aperture leading to better quality photos. Aperture ascertains the amount of light that enters into the lens, capturing more detail.
In the meanwhile, analyst Nomura Securities (via Barron's Asia) also suggests that, even though thedual camera setup may only be exclusive to the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple may bring optical image stabilisation to the 4.7-inch iPhone 7. Past leaks suggest that Apple is looking to make iPhone 7 1mm slimmer, and introduce a Smart Connector at the back for connecting the Smart Keyboard cover or other device like charging docks.
The larger variant is said to see a bump to 3GB of RAM, while both various will see antenna bandsshifted to the edges to make them look sleeker. For the first time, the upcoming iPhone is also rumoured to come in three variants - iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and the iPhone 7 Pro/ Plus Premium.
The Barron's report also claims that Sony has been lagging behind Apple's order for dual cameras due to natural hindrances. The April earthquake at Kumamoto damaged the company's manufacturing unit slowing down production, forcing Apple to go to LG to make some amount of cameras.

There is also an image leak by Steven Hemmerstoffer suggesting that a 256GB variant is going to be introduced in the iPhone 7 Pro/Plus Premium line-up. The image shows only 16GB, 64GB and 256GB chips, hinting that Apple might do away with the 128GB altogether. However, the base 16GB storage option is likely to remain. The image also shows a dual-camera module, as has been rumoured for the larger iPhone 7 variant for a while now.
