Reliance Jio’s plan: Rs 200 sim card will give you 75 GB, 4500 mins

Reliance Jio, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, is preparing for a soft launch of its 4G services soon, Credit Suisse said in a note.
Jio has already launched services for Reliance group employees and their friends three months back.
“Our visits to Reliance Digital stores in Mumbai revealed that the stores are preparing for a possible soft launch of Jio’s 4G connections soon,” Credit Suisse said.
Many of the store staff have undergone training sessions in recent days in enrolling customers, managing documentation and explaining product features.
The stores have been equipped with infrastructure that allows for quick enrolment.
“The staff mentioned they have received stocks of Jio SIM cards, but they have not been informed when the sales is to start,” it said.
For the soft launch, customers should be able to pick up a Jio SIM card for Rs 200, which should come with free data and voice valid for three months (as a benchmark the free usage offered to employees in the December launch was 75GB data and 4500 mins calls).
“The tariffs post the three-month period are unknown,” it said. “It needs to be seen if a customer needs to buy a Lyf handset to get the SIM, or if the SIMs will be sold standalone (the store attendants suggested standalone).”
Credit Suisse, which has held a more aggressive view of the impact of Reliance Jio on Indian telecom and rivals like Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular, said: “Our cautious view on Telco stocks stays, with upcoming spectrum auctions and RJio launch.”

This iPhone Case allows users to run Android on iOS

Tech lovers will definitely remember the work of Nick Lee who is a Brooklyn-based hacker, identified by tech community for hacking an Apple smartwatch to run Windows 95 in it.
Nick Lee who is also a developer and CTO of Tendigi, had recently revealed his new project that allows Android to work on iPhone using a 3D printed iPhone case. Yes, you read that right! Nick lee has just designed a 3D case which allows you to run two operating systems on the iPhone.
https://youtu.be/a1ivaxlbpmw
In a video, Nick lee seems to boot Android with the help of a Tendigi app on the iPhone. This iOS app used to interact with the case. With the help of this case, iPhone user can access any Android app easily and can enjoy Android on iOS.
First of all, Nick lee bought a board (Lemaker HiKey) and cloned the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and build a custom version of Android Marshmallow. Later he 3D printed an iPhone size enclosure and combined the board, a 650 mAh lithium-polymer battery, Boost converter & resistor to produce the case.
Once the design was completed, the design was bulky and looked like a brick. However, after several designs modification and 3D printing experiments, Nick Lee, managed to shrink the size of the case.
Nick Lee also included openings for HDMI, USB Ports, and SD card slot in the case. On which Nick lee said “Once I had a clear idea of component size and layout, I scaled the 3D model to a more reasonable size and added openings for the SD card, HDMI and USB ports. It’s not too much thicker than the average battery case”
Right Now, Nick lee has no plans of selling this product commercially, but he could be convinced to build a sleeker version of this case if there is interest .

WhatsApp May Soon Get Improved Music Sharing, Larger Emojis

  • Larger emojis appear to match the ones introduced by Apple
  • Users will now see album art when they receive a song
  • Both local and Apple Music songs can be shared
In addition to the upcoming features that had been spotted earlier this week – mentions and group invite links – it appears WhatsApp is also set to get improved music sharing features and larger emoji.
Reported by German publication Macerkopf, the upcoming features were spotted in the WhatsApp for iOS beta, just like mentions and group invite links. Let’s start with music sharing. The report notes that users can now share songs with their contacts. The songs can be stored locally, or users can link to the song on Apple Music. The recipient will see album art as well as a music icon. Currently shared ‘audio’ files do not have this functionality.
Coming to larger emoji – the move follows Apple’s unveiling of larger emoji with iOS 10, and WhatsApp appears to be preparing for their introduction, using what’s said to be the same size of emoji – three times bigger than regular ones.

whatsapp_ios_music_sharing_screenshot_macerkopf.jpg

Another feature recently spotted in the WhatsApp Beta for iOS changelog was gif image support. However, general WhatsApp for iOS users haven’t received gif image support so far.
Earlier this month, WhatsApp received a feature that allowed users to quote messages when replying. The user needs to long press a message in any conversation to see a reply option pop up alongside star, delete, forward, and copy.
Facebook-owned WhatsApp has been adding new features steadily, and the most anticipated is video calling, which was recently spotted in testing on the Android beta app. To recall, the last major update to the platform was last month – the addition of document sharing on WhatsApp Web. Shortly before that, the company rolled out its first desktop app for Windows and OS X.

IBM patents Google Glass-like night vision eyewear

Google-Glass-video-user-g-016-624x351

US tech giant IBM has patented an eye wear like Google Glass that will have red-eyed night vision capabilities, a media report said. Although not promising a true night vision, the device is described in the patent to improve sight under low light by tricking the brain to focus on high contrast imagery. “IBM’s Google Glass modifications include a sensor and ‘a comparator device’ designed to detect and contrast light intensity. When the light intensity drops below a set level, a pair of projectors — one for each eye — bathe the user’s eyes in red light,” a report in International Business Times (UK) said.
The patent claims the effect is similar to that of dark rooms used in photography or the red-tinted glasses worn by some airline pilots. Dark environment with a red tinge cause the rod cells, which are the photoreceptors in our eye, to send high contrast images to the brain. When the user enters a low-light environment, the projector automatically projects a low-level red light in to each eye of the user.
Shining red light directly into the eyes creates the same response rods as casting red light onto an environment. Which means it tricks the rod cells into sending higher contrast images to the brain. However, the company also issued a health warning. The patent read: “The wearer of current glasses such as Google Glass is subject to the risk of a phenomena referred to as binocular rivalry and phoria — a latent deviation or misalignment of the eyes that appears when both eyes are no longer looking at the same object.”

Xiaomi unveiled the Mi Band 2, a Fitbit-like activity tracker for $23

Xiaomi unveiled a brand new wearable device, the Mi Band 2. Despite the name, it’s the company’s third fitness tracking device after theMi Band and Mi Band Pulse. It track your steps, monitors your heart rate and (for the first time) features a tiny display. It costs RMB 149, or a little less than $23.

According to Xiaomi, the company has sold more than 20 million activity trackers already, making it the second largest fitness tracker company behind Fitbit. Like with other products, Xiaomi is able to capture market share with a very aggressive pricing strategy.

The Mi Band 2 is more expensive than its predecessors, but it’s also a bit fancier. The tiny black-and-white display displays time, your step count, your heart rate, as well as approximative distance and calorie counters. You can also use the device to monitor your sleep. Nothing groundbreaking if you’re familiar with activity trackers.

Interestingly, Xiaomi also borrowed a popular Apple Watch feature. If you’re sitting for too long, the Mi Band 2 will vibrate to remind you that you should move.

And if you have a Xiaomi phone, your phone detects if it is connected to your Mi Band so that you don’t need to type your passcode. If someone steals your phone and the Bluetooth device gets disconnected, the passcode is reactivated.

Today’s new device uses Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to your phone and battery lasts up to 20 days. It is water-resistant and the silicon bands are replaceable. Xiaomi was started selling the device in China on June 7.

Apple to Introduce Major I-phone Redesign Every 3 Years

In a new development, Apple has reportedly changed its iPhone product refresh cycle, and will now introduce major redesigns after a gap of three years. Unlike its traditional two years, Apple will now wait for three years to bring in major changes to the iPhone.

This change in the product refresh cycle has been attributed to a slowing market, and low innovation in smartphone functions. Major enhancements have little scope in the smartphone periphery, and hence Apple has changed its strategy.

This is why, all the iPhone 7 leaks show little change with respect to design, apart from the shift ofantenna bands. Traditionally,Apple introduces an evolutionary change with its iPhone 's' models, and a revolutionary change with the new numeric. We saw a completely new design with the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6s saw hardware and software upgrades with no visible design changes, and users expected the iPhone 7 to go through a complete makeover.

However, Nikkei.com reports that the big change will only come with the iPhone release in 2017, which has previously been reported to be called the iPhone 8 instead of the iPhone 7s. The iPhone 7 will see no drastic change. The report confirms that there will be upgrades in camera, and battery capacity. It reiterates past rumours of the iPhone 7 being water resistant, and also asserts that the 3.5mm audio jack will be removed. It also hints at the rumoured third variant by stating 'A high-end version of the model will give users better-quality photo capabilities via correction functions.'

Whether all of this is true remains to be seen. So far, rumoured specs include an A10 processor, dual camera setup and a 3GB RAM on the larger iPhone 7, and an upgrade to a new 32GB base variant finally ditching the 16GB storage option.

Today, Sirin Labs — a startup put together by a team of founders out of Israel — used an event in London to unveil the Solarin, a privacy-first device “aimed at the international businessperson who carries a lot of sensitive information but doesn’t want to compromise on usability, quality or design.”

The Solarin smartphone will go on sale June 1 in its own flagship store in London’s Mayfair neighborhood; and in high-end department store Harrods from 30 June, with prices starting at £9,500 (just under $14,000). The price and the chosen retail locations underscore that Sirin is not targeting your average, common businessperson, but a much smaller group of super-rich, for whom, presumably, $14,000 doesn’t seem like too much money to spend on a smartphone.

Indeed, Sirin is banking on the belief that for these buyers, security and related privacy features, as well as a slick design, will be much more of a priority than the price tag. (Or at least, when worrying about much larger sums of money, $14,000 might feel like a wise investment.)

The Solarin will be loaded with features from third-party companies such as mobile security, anti-cyberattack software from Zimperium; and KoolSpan chip-to-chip 256-bit AES encryption, “the same technology that militaries around the world use to protect their communications.” The phone will come with a physical security switch on its back for extra encryption, the company says.

Other specs speak to global travellers: they include Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with X10 LTE and Wi-Fi; up to 450 Mbps downlink and up to 150 Mbps uplink speeds; support for 24 bands LTE compatibility; support for 802.11ac 2×2 MU-MIMO (multi user multiple input, multiple output) technology; and WiGig (802.11ad) multi-gigabit Wi-Fi technology. It will also include a 23.8-megapixel camera; and a 5.5” IPS LED 2k resolution screen.

Sirin Labs says it has been working on the device for two years already — in R&D operations in Lund, Sweden and Tel Aviv — but it was only about a month ago, in April, that the company revealed that it had raised $72 million in a “seed” round from Moshe Hogeg, Kazakh businessman Kenges Rakishev, and the Chinese social networking service Renren to fund the operations.

The backers are regular investment partners: they all have backed Singulariteam, a VC fund managed by Hogeg; and Rakishev and Hogeg have also backed another fund called Genesis Angels as well as photo app Mobli. You get the impression that Sirin Labs’ backers see themselves as potential customers: collectively these previous investments represent hundreds of millions in finance. The individuals say none of these projects are connected as such, and Sirin is yet another independent operation.

There is something interesting about a company that is willing to throw everything at a new phone to see just how good good can be, but there are also some reservations I have with all this.

First, the company is operating on a seed round for now, and creating hardware — especially at this level — is a very costly exercise. Hogeg, who is president of Sirin Labs as well as co-founder and backer — says they are committed to this project, but it’s unclear just how far they will be willing to continue financing Sirin Labs and/or the Solarin for years to come.

Second, there are many claims being made about just what you are getting with this device. Hogeg says that these have been verified by the NCC Group, but those who are buying for privacy may want more checks.

And third, I have other questions not directly related to the Solarin itself. How will Sirin make sure that these extremely private and secure devices aren’t used by criminals or others for illegal means? And will they care if they are? Should we care?

Google’s My Account will now help both iOS and Android users find their lost phones

Google’s My Account will now help both iOS and Android users find their lost phones

Google has announced an update to its “My Account” service launched last year which will now include a feature that helps users find their lost or stolen phone. You’ll soon be able to find this new option just by googling “I lost my phone,” the company says. While Google already offered tools for Android users with missing devices, this expands Google’s phone-finding help to iOS devices.

Before, Android phone or tablet users could access the Android Device Manager to locate, ring, or remote wipe their device right from the web, similar to Apple’s “Find my iPhone/iPad.” And you could already search Google for “find my phone” to kick off this functionality, too, if you were an Android device owner.

Now, explains the company, users of both iOS or Android devices will be able to access similar options from the My Account page. Via the new “Find your phone” feature, you’ll be able to locate your phone, lock it remotely, call it, secure your account, leave a callback number on its screen, and more.

But in testing, it’s clear that Google can’t actually take control of iOS users’ devices. Instead, it directs users to Apple’s iCloud to find and lock their phone. Plus it offers a tool for calling the phone, and lets you sign out of Google services remotely, which is helpful for protecting your account from hacks. It also includes suggestions on how to reach out to your carrier or a local lost and found on Google Maps.

Google is also making it easier to reach the feature, as well as the My Account site in general. In the latter case, the company says that, in the near future, you’ll be able to find the site just by searching Google for your own name.

You’ll be able to launch the site from the Google app, too, by saying “OK Google, show me my Google account.” This works today in English, and support for other languages is coming soon.

The My Account site, for those unfamiliar, launched almost exactly one year ago to offer Google users centralized access to privacy and security settings across the company’s services. Today, that includes things like Ads Settings, plus Privacy and Security checkups. The idea is to make it easier to manage and protect your data and privacy as related to Google’s many services in one destination, instead of having to visit each property individually.

To date, over a billion people have used My Account, Google says.

The new “Find your phone” feature is available now, with Google search integration arriving shortly.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Listed on Company Site; Galaxy S8 Tipped to Sport Dual Camera Setup

  • The listed SM-N930F handset may be the Galaxy Note 7.
  • The Galaxy Note 7 is expected to launch on August 2.
  • The Galaxy S8 is tipped to sport a dual camera setup.
Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Note 7 earlier than tradition, and is expected to host anUnpacked event on August 2. Now, a fresh leak hints that the company’s website is already in the works of hosting an additional page listing the Galaxy Note 7. Furthermore, there is also a separate leak revealing some interesting details of the Galaxy S8 scheduled for release next year.
Starting with the Galaxy Note 7, the South Korean company’s official website now hosts (via GSMArena) a user agent profile page for the model number SM-N930F. Unfortunately, the profile page doesn’t reveal any details apart from the model number. Presumably the SM-N930F is the Galaxy Note 7, as the Galaxy Note 5 was SM-N920, and the Note 4 was the SM-N910 previously.
Samsung is said to have skipped a numeral, and ditched the 6 to be in sync with its flagship – Galaxy S series. The phablet has been leaked on various occasions, and it is said to come with an iris scanner. This will enable users to unlock the smartphone just by looking at it. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 isrumoured to pack a 5.8-inch QHD display; a Snapdragon 820 or Snapdragon 823 processor; 6GB of RAM; 32GB of inbuilt storage; expandable storage via microSD card, a 12-megapixel rear camera, and a Dual Pixel setup in the front. Samsung is also expected to ship the Galaxy Note 7 with a USB Type-C port. The mass production of the phablet is said to begin on July 5.
In a separate leak (via Wccftech), Samsung’s next year flagship smartphone Galaxy S8 may just sport the dual camera setup that is aggressively rumoured on the iPhone 7 Plus this year. The camera will be built by Samsung Motors (Semco) itself. It is also expected to feature a 4K (2160×3840 pixels) display, and may be powered by a Snapdragon 830 SoC. The chip is pegged to be produced using a 10nm FinFET process for more power and energy efficiency.

Freedom 251: Ringing Bells Says Will Begin Phone Deliveries From June 28

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ringing Bells first unveiled Freedom 251 in February.
  • The phone has been described as a scam by some.
  • Ringing Bells says deliveries will take place from June 28.
Ringing Bells, a little-known company that ran into controversy after announcing the Freedom 251 – a Rs. 251 smartphone, now claims it will start deliveries of the handset to customers from June 28.
Deliveries will start to customers who have registered for buying the phone, Noida-based company’s Managing Director Mohit Goel said.
“We will start shipment of Freedom 251 from June 28 to customers who paid for it earlier on COD (cash-on-delivery) basis,” he told Press Trust of India.
Ringing Bells began selling the handset, Freedom 251, via its website in February. But the launch of the smartphone, touted to be the world’s cheapest, swirled into controversy, with some calling it a fraudulent scheme.
The website of the company also crashed during two-day sale due to the huge response from prospective buyers. The company claimed that around 30,000 customers had booked the phone in the first batch despite the glitch.
The company, however, withdrew the product and refunded the payments to customers following a close scrutiny by government agencies. The company had said about 30,000 people paid for booking the phone and over 7 crore people registered for it. Later, the company said that it would deliver the phone on cash-on-delivery mode to those who placed the order. Goel said that Ringing Bells has a foolproof plan to support the price but did not disclose it.
Ringing Bells President Ashok Chaddha had explained earlier that the manufacturing cost of the phone was about Rs. 2,500, which had to be recovered through a series of measures like economies of scale, innovative marketing, reduction in duties and creating an e-commerce marketplace.
He had said that the company would make phones in India that would lead to 13.8 percent savings on duties and further save on cost by selling it online.
The phone was to be manufactured in Noida and Uttaranchal.
“Two plants will be set up for Rs. 250 crores each with a capacity of 5 lakh phones. The money will come in the form of debt and equity (1.5:1),” Chaddha had said.
However, industry players had expressed doubt over the claim. Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad too had asked the Department of Electronics and IT to look into the matter.
The company had also come under the scanner of Excise and Income Tax Departments amid debate over the feasibility of a 3G-enabled handset for Rs. 251.
